The following research project proposes to implement a virtual learning environment for the strengthening of autonomous learning through metacognitive strategies in students of grade 5 of elementary school of the educational institution INEM Lorenzo Maria Lleras, Nuevo Bosque in the city of Monteria. The identified problem emerges in that students of this grade have difficulties in their learning process, especially in relation to the use of strategies that promote autonomous learning. Therefore, in the implementation of the virtual environment, metacognitive strategies are used for reading comprehension, addressing issues rooted in the computer science area plan of the institution. The general objective of the research project is to strengthen the autonomous learning of 5th grade students of the INEM educational institution, Nuevo Bosque Campus, through the implementation of a virtual environment using metacognitive strategies. As a methodology, a qualitative approach research is presented, under an action-research design, data are collected, then analyzed and interpreted and, finally, the solution to the problem is given. Finally, the results obtained from the research prove that the use of metacognitive strategies for reading comprehension, mediated by a virtual environment, strengthen the autonomous learning of fifth grade students. These results show that autonomous learning is closely related to metacognitive strategies, and the adequate use of these strategies benefits the students' learning achievement.
