Parasitic diseases, such as malaria and geohelminthiasis, are a public health problem, affecting the nutritional and immunological status of affected populations. In Colombia, they mainly affect children in rural and depressed areas. The Department of Córdoba is one of the macro foci of malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax. At present, the relationship between the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) axis and the clinical complications of patients with Plasmodium vivax malaria co-infection - geohelminthiasis is not defined. Objective: To evaluate the effect of co-infection with Plasmodium vivax and geohelminths on the plasma concentration of the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) axis and insulin-like growth factor 1 binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3). Materials and methods: An analytical, cross-sectional study was carried out with the participation of 60 individuals, distributed in 4 groups: malaria (n=15); geohelminthiasis (n=15); malaria-geoheminthiasis co-infection (n=15) and apparently healthy individuals (n=15), in the Tierralta region (Córdoba- Colombia). The diagnosis of malaria was made by thick drop and geohelminthiasis by Kato Katz. The plasma concentration of albumin was determined by a colorimetric technique through the reaction with the green dye bromocresol in a slightly acidic medium. GH, IGF-1, and IGFBP-3 were determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), specific to each molecule. Results: It was observed that male individuals showed a greater susceptibility to malaria coinfection with P. vivax – geohelminthiasis, while participants who were aged >10 years had greater susceptibility to malaria and coinfection malaria with P. vivax – geohelminthiasis. On the other hand, the species of geohelminths Trichuris trichiura presented a higher prevalence of infection in the study population. The average concentration of albumin (2.8 ± 0.53 g/dL), GH (8.3 ± 5.54 g/dL), IGF-1 (23.9 ± 10.9 g/dL), and IGFBP-3 (257.3 ± 136 g/dL) decreased significantly in malaria patients compared to controls (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: Co-infection by Plasmodium vivax-geohelminthiasis has a negative impact on the GH/GF-1 axis and its main binding protein IGFBP-3, which in recurrent infections can affect nutritional status and complicate patients with co-infection with P. vivax malaria and geohelminthiasis.eng
