Cassia fistula mostró alta inhibición frente a Penicillium spp. y respuesta variable frente a A. flavus. | spa |
dc.description.abstract | Fungal diseases represent a major threat to global agricultural production, being responsible for significant losses. Although synthetic fungicides have been widely used, their excessive application has caused negative impacts on the environment, human health, and control effectiveness due to the development of resistance in pathogens. In this context, plant extracts emerge as a sustainable and less toxic alternative. Objective. To evaluate the antifungal activity of ethanolic and aqueous plant extracts of Cassia fistula L. and Caesalpinia spinosa against Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium spp., through their preparation and comparison under controlled conditions. Materials and methods. Ethanolic extracts of C. fistula and aqueous extracts of C. spinosa were obtained from bark and leaves, respectively, by maceration, filtration, and concentration. Fungal strains were cultured on PDA agar and suspensions prepared in RPMI broth. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined using dilutions from 200 to 1000 μg/mL. Antifungal activity was assessed by optical density at 620 nm at 48, 96, and 144 hours. Positive controls (CAVALIER 325 SC) and negative controls (5% DMSO) were used. Results. Cassia fistula showed effective inhibition against Penicillium spp. and variable results against A. flavus. In contrast, Caesalpinia spinosa showed a notable inhibitory effect against A. flavus, but lower efficacy against Penicillium spp. Conclusion. Both plant extracts demonstrated antifungal activity and appear to be viable natural alternatives to synthetic fungicides in the context of integrated management of agricultural diseases | eng |
