At present, infectious diseases and zoonotic diseases are mostly the result or cause of vector-borne diseases. Heartworm is a zoonotic disease caused by the Dirofilaria immitis nematode, which affects dogs, cats and humans that inhabit tropical and temperate areas worldwide with climatic conditions of high temperatures and humidity. Canine heartworm is widely distributed worldwide and is favored by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity, being predominant in regions with hot, tropical and subtropical climates (Simon et al. 2012). Different diagnostic methods for heartworm disease were compared in canines naturally infected with D. immits, 59 dogs were positive by PCR, 59 were positive by modified Knott test (TKM), 80 dogs were positive by TKM-PCR, 96 were positive by the antigen test without heat treatment (TIM) and 104 dogs were positive with the test heat treated antigens (TIM-TT). The sensitivity and specificity of TKM were 53.0% and 92.0%, respectively; for PCR it was 45.0% and 84.0%, for TIM it was 92.0% and 99.0% and for TIM-TT 95.2% y 99%, respectively. The Youden index determined the best cut-off point between sensitivity and specificity for TIM-TT (0.94); followed by TKM (0.55) and PCR (0.34). Cohen's Kappa estimated low performance for CRP, moderate performance for TKM and good performance for TIM. The actual prevalence of D. immitis in dogs was 55.8.eng
