Objective: To describe the self-care practices carried out by adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, through a narrative review of the scientific literature published between the years 2010-2020. Methodology: Narrative literature review study. Results: Through this review, it has been possible to know that adults with DM2 do not maintain good habits and self-care behaviors for the maintenance of health and control of the disease, it should also be noted that in the results it was always observed that women are more careful and responsible for their health and maintain better self-care practices compared to men. Conclusions: In most of the investigations, the lack of practices of self-care, monitoring, and self-care management, carried out by adults with DM2, was evidenced, which makes them prone to developing complications and decreasing their quality of life.
