Publicación Acceso abierto Frecuencia del antígeno kell en donantes de un banco de sangre en Montería, Colombia(2021-07-14) Ruiz Barrios, María Leonor; Rolon Toledo, Mary EstellaEstimate the prevalence of the Kell antigen in donors from a blood bank in the city of Montería, Colombia, during the period from January 2019 to June 2020. Materials and methods. Descriptive and cross-sectional study, in a period from January 2019 to June 2020. Variables of sex, age, ABO blood group and correctly identified RH(D) were studied and the data were organized in tables and analyzed in Microsoft Excel. Results. During the period from January 2019 to June 2020, there were 20,534 donors in a blood bank in Montería-Colombia, in which a frequency of 0.18% was obtained for the presence of Kell antigen. Within the study population, 84.6% was male, and the highest prevalence was found in people with an average age of 34 years. The age group with the highest prevalence was between 18-29 years. The most representative blood group was O, with a frequency of 69.20%, and with respect to the Rh(D) group, the highest frequency was found in the Rh(D) negative group with 89.70%. Conclusions. The frequency of Kell antigen in donors of a blood bank in Montería-Colombia was low (0.18%), in comparison with reports from other regions of the country and other countries. Larger studies are needed where there is greater representation to define the prevalence of the Kell antigen in our population, since this study is biased because, according to current regulations for Blood Banks in Colombia, only the Kell phenotype is performed on donors RH (D) negative.
