It aims to interpret the contribution of the image used in school geography to develop critical thinking in students from 4th grade to 9th grade of this institution. This research was carried out based on qualitative methodology, with the participation of teachers and students from the institution. The instruments applied were semi-structured interviews and participant observation of teachers. In addition, an exhaustive analysis was made on the use of geographic images, such as: cartographic images, landscape images, three-dimensional images and images in school notebooks made by students. After the analysis of the information, it was concluded that images in the teaching of school geography are very important for students and teachers from the institution. However, there are images that are more relevant than others. Therefore, it is necessary to make a re-signification in the use of the images, especially the maps. Although they are the most used, they need a better elaboration because it is difficult to interpret them to develop cognitive abilities and critical thinking in students.
