Objective: the objective was to describe the popular knowledge and practices of self-care in a group of people with high blood pressure and how they influence adherence to treatment. Methodology: a descriptive study with a qualitative approach was developed, because it addressed the reality of a specific context with an approach to ethnoengineering. Ten people with AHT in the urban area of the municipality of Montería participated in the study. Results: knowledge and selfcare practices were passed from generation to generation, being the source of ethical knowledge, grandparents, parents and uncles. Despite the great changes, new discoveries for disease management, certain knowledge and practices for disease management still prevail, based on the use of medicinal plants, food consumption and approaches to a superior being.
