The research was conducted in a Foreign Languages Teaching Degree at a university in Northwestern Colombia. The objective was to identify the components that aided participants to build and elaborate arguments in culture-driven discussions. Socratic questioning was an integral element of the discussions. To attain the purpose of this research, a qualitative case study design was employed. Findings showed that the factors that facilitated the construction of argumentative processes in culture discussions can potentially be peer scaffolding, previous knowledge, inquiry, activism, and connection to participants’ reality.Introduction ………………………………….1Theoretical Framework ……………………..8Conceptual Framework …………………….8Critical Thinking ………………………...8Bloom’s Taxonomy ……………………………...9Argumentation.…………………………...………….. 11Culture ………………………………...………14Socratic Questioning …………………..17Spontaneous ……………………………….18Exploratory …………………………………………………..19Focused ……...........……………..20Literature Review ……………………………22Critical reading and literary texts …………………………....23Different components of Critical thinking …………..24Argumentation and collaboration ……..26Culture and Critical Thinking...…………28Socratic Questioning and Critical Thinking ………..32Methods ……................……..37Research design ………………………………………………..37Participants ………………………...39Data Collection ………………..………41Assessment Rubric …………………….42Semi-structrured interviews …….…….43Procedure ………………………….45Data Analysis ……………………………47Validity and Reliability ……….……49Ethical issues ………………....……...…51Findings……………………………………53Analysis of student’s performance ..............53Factors that contribute to argumentation …………………..56Peer Scaffolding ………......…................. 56Previous Knowledge ……….............. 61Activism …...………….......................... 64Connection to Participants’ Reality ……. 66Curiosity and Inquiry ….…............67Discussion………...…………..……72Peer Scaffolding …………...………..73Previous Knowledge …………………..….74Activism ………………………………………............75Connection to Participants’ Reality …...…..76Curiosity and Inquiry ……………………………….77General discussion of the findings ………….79Limitations and Areas for Further Research ….………79Conclusion….…………………...83References ……………………...85Appendix …………………………......94application/pdfengCopyright Universidad de Córdoba, 2022Factors that contribute to argumentation in culture-based discussions among efl studentsTrabajo de grado - Maestríainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessAtribución-NoComercial-SinDerivadas 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)Pensamiento críticoArgumentosCulturaCuestionamiento socráticoCritical thinkingArgumentsCultureSocratic questioning
